IMPROVING THE ACOUSTICS IN REHEARSAL ROOMS

In collaboration with BackstagePro, we recently organized a giveaway for a t.akustik complete package aimed at improving room acoustics. Our choice fell on the rehearsal space of the Bluegrass, Folk, and Country band ‘The Gamblin’ Five’ from Miehlen, which presented quite demanding acoustic conditions.

The five band members play a wide range of acoustic instruments in a former body shop, which is far from acoustically ideal. Due to the size of the hall, there were prolonged reverberation times and strong echoes, which not only made it difficult to hear their own music but also impaired communication among them.

Particularly in the bass range, there were pronounced resonances, resulting in bass figures being engulfed in an undefined drone. Combined with numerous smooth surfaces on the walls and ceiling, this created unfavorable acoustics and an unpleasant playing experience. The only glimmer of hope: the ceiling was slightly slanted.

It became clear that the members of Gamblin’ Five needed our help! Specifically, large bass traps needed to be strategically placed in the room corners. Therefore, the members of The Gamblin’ Five initially distributed our t.akustik CBT-37 Corner Bass Traps in all corners under the ceiling. The polyurethane foam of our specially shaped absorbers effectively dampens low-frequency sound waves and can be easily affixed with t.akustik Contact Glue.

In addition, our WAS-7 Absorbers were used on the walls, arranged in pairs for balanced damping performance, with one absorber rotated by 90 degrees. Even on the windows, we were able to install the WAS-7 Absorbers using the special t.akustik Contact Glue without any issues.

Our WAS-7 Absorbers are broadband absorbers that are particularly effective from around 800 Hz onwards. This allowed us to effectively suppress flutter echoes.

Next up was the ceiling, where in principle, the WAS-7 Absorbers could have also been installed. However, to avoid over-damping the room, we preferred to use our t.akustik WDS-7 GR Diffusers. Thanks to the identical footprint of the WAS-7 Absorbers and the WAS-7 Diffusers, these can be wonderfully combined with each other. And thanks to the black color, a great contrast was also created against the OSB panels of the ceiling.

The former workshop thus instantly received a professional studio look – and The Gamblin’ Five expressed their gratitude by giving a small concert directly to our camera team.
